What to Expect in Worship
We gather in worship to find meaning and live more deeply. Worship creates connections within, among, and beyond us, calling us to our better selves, calling us to live with wisdom and compassion. The children begin the service in the Sanctuary, and then go to their Religious Education classes. Childcare is available for children age 3 and under.
Our congregation’s worship is centered around monthly spiritual themes, such as abundance, invitation, letting go, or hero’s journey. Our Explorations small group ministries and our children’s programs reflect the monthly themes.
A typical Sunday morning worship service might include:
- Words of welcome
- Lighting a flaming chalice, the symbol of our faith, often sharing a reflection from a congregant on the topic of the day
- A multigenerational “story for all ages” (often drawn from the Wonderbox)
- Music, both instrumental and vocal, sometimes including guest musicians
- A time for silent meditation or prayer
- Readings—chosen from ancient or contemporary sources
- A sermon, reflecting our monthly theme, given by our minister, a guest speaker, or a member of the congregation
- An offering, collecting financial donations for the congregation; each month we share 1/2 of our plate collection with a social services or justice agency doing work in our community.
Our worship incorporates holiday celebrations, child dedications, and coming-of-age ceremonies. We offer childcare and learning programs for children and youth during the Sunday service.
