Often I have newcomers inquire, “Don’t you use the bible in Sunday School?” My answer is usually, “Yes, and…”. That’s one of the great things about Unitarian Universalism, right? We aren’t limited to a single “Bible, Testament, or Prayer Book.”  We can find the texts that give our lives meaning and claim them as our own sacred books. It can also be challenging to figure out which texts to choose. In our covenant, which we recite together each Sunday morning, we make this promise: Love is the spirit of this church and service its law. This is our great covenant…to dwell together in peace, to seek the truth in love, and to help one another.

This year, beginning in November, we will be alternating between working on some performances and exploring some morale character themes using some materials from Harry Potter.

The Harry Potter Series, by J. K. Rowling, is one of those texts that can get children excited about learning our UU values including the promises made in our covenant, our principles, and our rich history of members who came before us. Children also learn about bravery, friendship, trust, service and love. I guess you could say that the stories are magical!

What classes will be like:

Friendship, loyalty, leadership, cleverness, and courage are just a few of the traits our favorite Wizards possess. We will discover the qualities it takes to be a wizard as we learn and explore:

x  using potions

x engaging in fun art activities

x doing important social justice activities

x  playing exciting games

x making and eating delicious recipes

x working puzzles

x solving mysteries

In our class we will ask questions such as what would you do if someone you trusted let you down? What is empathy and do you have it? What does it mean to put others first? How does What we are learning in class connect us to who we are as Unitarian Universalists?
