Hearing the Cries of the World

In Hinduism and Buddhism, Kuan Yin (she goes by many names) is described as a goddess “who hears the cries of the world.” You may notice that her posture is quite relaxed and open as she takes in the concerns of the entire globe (very unlike how most of us take in the daily news). Why is it worthwhile to open ourselves to continually hear the cries of the world? What perspective can help us find joy and meaning in this simple act?
