“Faith in Uncertainty”

One of our great contemporary writers, Anne Lamott, has a perceptive take on the definition of faith: “The opposite of faith is not doubt. It’s certainty.”
I’ve just returned from a pilgrimage to Transylvania, where i witnessed the birth of Unitarianism, and the site where one of our martyrs died November 5, 1579: Francis David. He dared to see faith as not a single destination, but a path that was continually unfolding, changing, growing. In many Unitarian churches throughout Transylvania, in honor of his risk and sacrifice for religious freedom, is his most famous statement, prominently displayed: “Faith is a gift from God.”
How do we make our own uncertainty the cornerstone of a growing faith? Come Sunday, to embrace the power of doubt.
