What does it take to be a Board member at UUYO? Time, energy, and commitment is one answer but that is not the whole picture. Yes, it takes those things, plus more. At UUYO the operation of the church is guided by its Constitution and Bylaws. The Constitution stipulates that:
Active Members are eligible to serve as Board members and officers and chairs of Core Committees. An Active Member is one who: has signed the membership book, is at least sixteen years of age; and within a twelve-month period prior to determination of active status, has participated in congregational activities and has supported the congregation by financial contributions and/or service.
Board members are normally recruited by the Nominating Committee and the election takes place at UUYO’s Annual Meeting; only Active Members may vote on issues at this meeting. While the Nominating Committee does not begin its work until later in the year anyone who is interested in becoming board members can discover more details about Board activity from the following resources:
- Read the Constitution and Bylaws which are available on the church website or from the Church Office 330-746-3067 or office@uuyo.org
- Read previous board reports which are also on the website:
- Attend a Board meeting. The UUYO Board meets from 6-8 pm on the third Thursday of the month via Zoom using the same link that is used for the Sunday Service. Visitors are welcome to join the meeting; if it is necessary to go into Executive session to discuss personnel or other sensitive matters the visitors may be asked to “step away” during that time.
- Talk to a current or former Board member to hear what they have to say.
