Juneteenth aka Freedom Day commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union general Gordon Granger got word to enslaved African Americans in remote parts of Texas that they were now free, more than 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. In a month that also celebrates LGBTQ+ Pride Month established in 1969 to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, it is appropriate we think of the intersection between these two holidays. What role can we play in helping ourselves and our nation truly come of age?
