Volunteering at UUYO

CoffeemakingIf you are new to the UUYO community, one of the quickest and best ways to get to know people is to volunteer for one of the many simple tasks that keep UUYO humming. While volunteering is completely ‘voluntary’, we do consider volunteering part of our shared ministry, which is how we care for one another and support the life of the community.

We encourage you to consider any of these roles. These are one-time or short term activities that most anyone can do. Generally we will make sure you are paired with or have help from someone who knows the ropes so you don’t have to worry about getting it right.

Contact information for all these people can be found in the directory (requires password), or contact the church office (office@uuyo.org), 330-746-3067.

Making Coffee

You can sign up to make coffee for a particular Sunday of your choice. We’ll pair you with an experienced coffee maker. You’ll meet lots of others as you help them with beverages. Plan to bring cookies, bars, or other simple snacks for about 60 people. To sign up, use the sign-up sheet in Channing Hall, or contact Kadey Kimpel.

Welcoming and Ushering

Help greet visitors and congregants and provide bulletins and other resources. Help in the collection of the offering, and with the counting after the service (about 15 minutes). We’ll pair you with an experienced usher. Contact Rima Selius. Here are the basic Instructions for Greeters.

Selling Equal Exchange Products

Set up and sell chocolates, bags of coffee and other products during coffee hour. These are sustainably grown, fair trade products. This is a great way to meet people. Contact Ellen Satre.

Building And Grounds Workparty

Come to the workparty on the third Saturday of each month at 10 AM to approximately lunchtime. Projects range from cleaning, gardening, organizing to light building maintenance (special skills welcome). Contact Martin Berger.

Teaching Religious Education

We are always happy to have people assist with teaching or childcare on most any Sunday. Teaching assistants will work in one of our three grade levels with a teacher who is familiar with the curriculum being used.

Childcare assistants work with our paid childcare provider caring for our infants and young children.

We also are happy to have you offer a special presentation or do an activity with the children. Things like making applesauce, learning music, learning about space exploration have been offered recently. Contact BeckyAnn Harker.

Working at the Farmer’s Market

During the summer, UUYO is heavily involved in supporting the Northside Farmer’s Market, which is held Saturdays on our grounds. Help with setup and takedown, selling coffee and sweets, selling WIC and EBT tokens, providing neighborhood information, and other things. Contact Jim Converse.

Assisting as a Worship Associate

Assist in preparing and presenting worship. Start by coming to the Worship Associate meetings, held every 2-3 months. If you are interested in what we do, choose to help, initially by just reading for a service, or by helping with research or preparation, or more. Contact Sarah Lown.

Leading Adult Forum

Have a topic you’d like to present, or a discussion you’d like to lead? Start by attending an Adult Forum meeting, most Sundays at 9:30 AM. Then contact Lowell Satre or the office.
