Forum Leader: Tim Malone 9:30 AM Channing Hall 9:30 AM Channing Hall “Jubilee Gardens” is one of Youngstown’s urban gardening programs, and the beneficiary of an upcoming Give Away the Plate collections as part of our social action program to support local food production in the Youngstown area. We will learn about Jubilee Gardens’ goals and challenges. 9:30 AM Channing Hall “Sacred Singing” — We will spend a few minutes discussing the Women with Wings organization, the meditative and healing aspects of simple songs, chants, and the relationship to spirituality. Then let’s get singing. If desired bring your drums or hand percussion instruments. Sarah Jordan has attended the Singing in Sacred Circle Workshop put on by Women with Wings three times. 9:30 AM Channing Hall Jim Converse will lead a discussion of an upcoming Congressional farm bill and will encourage people to contact their lawmakers urging them to make the bill more friendly to small farmers who produce locally grown food. We will also get an update on the church’s farm to table project at Martin Luther King School. This session is brought to you by the Church’s Social Action Committee. 9:30 AM Channing Hall Archaeologists know a good deal about the male rulers of the ancient Maya of Mesoamerica–but what about Maya women? Molly Toth, a member of our church, will discuss recent excavations at Cancuen, Guatemala, and give a brief presentation on ancient and modern Maya society and gender roles. 9:30 AM Channing Hall Adam Lee, a member of our church, will relate some of the cultural adventures he experienced on his recent journey around our planet. 9:30 AM Channing Hall Ellen and Lowell Satre will show photos and talk about their recent tandem bicycle adventure which began in Barcelona, Spain. They will take you to Catalonia, southern France, and Corsica. 9:30 AM Channing Hall Art Hewitt, a member of our church, has belonged to Toastmasters for many years. He will describe the club and how it helps members develop public speaking skills. 9:30 AM Channing Hall Allen Pierce, a member of our church and on the Criminal Justice faculty at YSU, will talk about why we have mass killings, such as the recent one in Norway, the Virginia Tech shootings in 2007, and the Washington, DC, sniper attacks of 2002. 9:30 AM Channing Hall Michael Dorfi, a Youngstown native, naval frogman, retired elementary teacher/mentor, husband, father, and member of the UUMF (Men’s Fellowship) of First UU Church of San Diego, is visiting Youngstown in early September to attend his 50th high school reunion. He will share his enthusiasm for support groups at our first Adult Forum of the new church year. Don’t miss it! There will be no Adult Forums for the summer, through mid-August. However, our summer services will provide an opportunity to speak with our outside presenters during the conversation part of the service. 9:30 AM Channing Hall Steve Oravecz will hold a discussion about the UUA Ethical Eating Proposal. 9:30 AM Channing Hall Gary Davenport, a member of the church and a student at YSU, will discuss and show some photographs of his recent rip to Guatemala and El Salvador. 9:30 AM Channing Hall We will view the second part of Iron Jawed Angels, a true story of how young activists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns put their lives at risk to help American women win the right to vote.
