Assault on Roe vs. Wade Monday, July 11

Moderator, Emily Thome, VP for Development at Planned Parenthood Northeast Ohio, will introduce panelists:  Karen O’Malia and Ginny Shorten, who spearheaded Right to Choose efforts prior to and directly following Roe vs. Wade; Sarah Lowry and Molly Toth, graduate students currently involved in women’s reproductive health issues.  Emily will add commentary and perspective to the debate.  Should be a lively generational dialogue on the 40 years since the Roe decision.

Aphrodite vs. Athena: the Treatment of Goddess Archetypes by Contemporary Men and Women Artists Monday, August 15

Karen O’Malia will present a multi-media program which she is preparing for a Creativity and Madness seminar. She will compare three women artists: Judy Chicago, the mother of feminist art; Lalla Essayidi, a 21st century artist who grew up in Morocco and lived in Saudi Arabia; and Mickalene Thomas, a 21st century African American artist, with three men artists: John Currin, a 21st century artist best known for satirical paintings dealing with provocative sexual and social themes; Francesco Clemente, a 21st century artist, who interprets reality based upon his perceptions; and John Swannell, a British photographer interested in abstract beauty.

Sex and the Media:  Sex Role Stereotypes, Gender Identity and Inclusiveness –Monday, August 22

Members of the Mahoning Valley Community Leadership Council of Planned Parenthood Northeast Ohio, Jennifer Shima, Patty Latham, and others, will present a panel and audience discussion on how the media influences sex role stereotypes and gender identity, and how that portrayal influences inclusiveness in schools, workplace and other institutions.

First Unitarian Universalist Church Presents:
Dreams and Other Pools of Light
Saturday, August 21, 7:30 pm

An evening of poetry, dance, music and visual/video art, will be staged on Saturday, August 21st at 7:30 pm at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown, corner of Elm and Illinois, just north of YSU. This multi-media performance features compositional dance, poetry and music ranging from Peter Gabriel to Neil Young.

The performers for Dreams and Other Pools of Light include: Jimmy McClellan, Kelly Bancroft, Nancy & Billy Colantone, Diane Bielski, Kathleen Murray, Teddy Pantelas, Jaci Clark, Tyler Clark, visual artist Josh Terlecki and Susan Callen-Miracle who conceived, choreographed, produced and directed.

Doors open 7:00pm. Program at 7:30
General admission is $10, and seniors and students for $8

Aug 2: Universal Cafe – La Traviata

August 2 Opera Western Reserve Young Artists Program: Several members of the OWR Young Artists Program will give a preview performance of the arias and other music from La Traviata, to be staged on November 12, at Stambaugh Auditorium. During their performance, they will chat with the audience about the music, composer and story, and include everyone in a fun improvisation segment. This should be a delightful evening of music, learning and participation.

July 12: Marijuana Legalization

July 12th – 7 pm

Our first Universal Cafe kicks off with a panel discussion on legalizing marijuana. Why is marijuana illegal? Is it hazardous to our health, or medicinal? Does it pose a risk to the safety of our citizens, or does it get a bad rap? Panelist include Rep. Robert Hagan, co-sponsor of the medical marijuana bill before the Ohio House of Representatives; Jamie See from the Ohio chapter of NORML; and Sgt. Scott Weimer, Canfield Police Department and former pharmacist. They will discuss the spectrum of issues related to the role of marijuana in our society.
