11 AM Sanctuary
We live on a world made unique by the thin layer of life on its surface. Yet it is so easy, in our culture, to lose touch with the grandeur of that reality. How do we remain awake to that awareness? What yearnings, emotions, arise within us, when we abide in this understanding?
Worship Leader: Rev. Matt Alspaugh
Worship Associate: Patricia Natali
9:30 AM Channing Hall
Susie Beiersdorfer will talk about the elements that make our earth precious.
Sunday April 22, 11 AM
Our Sunday Worship Service will include a New Member Welcome Ceremony. We’ll include all people who’ve joined since the last such ceremony was held. This is an important and meaningful welcome ritual, not only for new members, but for the entire congregation. If you have joined in the last two years, and haven’t participated in this ceremony, we hope you will come and be part of it.
As a kindness for planning, please email Diane in the office to let her know if you plan to be a part of this ceremony.

Saturday April 21, from 9 AM to 1 PM
Belonging to UUYO is for anyone who is thinking about greater involvement in UUYO, and possibly becoming a member. In this informative gathering, we’ll get to know each other, and learn a bit about this church and Unitarian Universalism. We’ll have an overview of the history of the church, and learn about how things get done at UUYO, and meet some of the leaders and doers here. We’ll also explore the building, maybe uncovering a few secrets along the way. A brunch will be provided. Those who wish to join UUYO will have an opportunity to do so the end of this gathering.
Please email or call the office at 330-746-3067 if you are planning to attend. Please email or call Rev. Matt (330-333-1456) if you have questions.
Three Tuesdays – April 17, 24, and May 1 (7-8:30 PM)
One of the items for consideration at the UU General Assembly in Phoenix in June is a resolution rejecting the Doctrine of Discovery. What is the Doctrine of Discovery? Here’s the story from the UUA website:
When Christopher Columbus first set foot on the white sands of Guanahani island, he performed a ceremony to “take possession” of the land for the king and queen of Spain, acting under the international laws of Western Christendom. Although the story of Columbus’ “discovery” has taken on mythological proportions in most of the Western world, few people are aware that his act of “possession” was based on a religious doctrine now known in history as the Doctrine of Discovery. Even fewer people realize that today – five centuries later – the United States government still uses this archaic doctrine to deny the rights of indigenous peoples. Read Five Hundred Years of Injustice: The Legacy of Fifteenth Century Religious Prejudice by Steve Newcomb of the Indigenous Law Institute.
What role has it played in American history? Why should we repudiate it? We’ll explore these questions with discussion, readings, and videos. Leader: Matt Alspaugh
As a kindness, please email the office or call the office at 330-746-3067 if you are planning to attend.
11 AM Sanctuary
Who gave Columbus the right to conquer and enslave the humans he encountered in the Western Hemisphere? What papal bull still informs American law and policy on immigration, including Arizona’s SB1070? We’ll explore this complicated history and ponder how we respond.
Worship Leader: Rev. Matt Alspaugh

Salvatore DiLiello, ND, is a naturopathic doctor with a concentration in Homeopathy and Herbology, and a Reiki/Energy Medicine Practitioner, who focuses on preventive care and wellness. He will talk about how naturopathic medicine can empower clients to achieve optimal health. Unlike orthodox medicine, naturopathy looks not at the disease but at the individual’s body, mind, emotion, and spirit. Lisa Rockwell is a medical intuitive healer and teacher whose passion is to inspire and awaken the innate ability to heal yourself and others. She will talk on Healing Modalities such as earth energy healing, healing hands, crystal healing, and reiki.
Church member Hope Lovrinoff-Moran, in association with Three Paths Healing Center, will introduce the forum.
Wednesdays, April 18, 25, & May 2, 9, 16, 23 (7-8:30 PM)
Building Your Own Theology has been a popular program at UUYO for people to explore their spirituality. This BYOT uses the second program in the series: “Exploring.” This draws from the UU sources and constructs from systematic theology. Both new and long-term congregants are welcome to attend — you do not need to have attended the first BYOT series to attend this one (they are not sequential) . Please contact Matt for more information.
As a kindness, please email the office or call the office at 330-746-3067 if you are planning to attend.
11 AM Sanctuary
Jesus is not the only deity who died and was resurrected or was born again as a god. This was a common theme in the ancient world. What makes this theme so compelling? What might stories of resurrection and hope have to say to us today? This is a multigenerational service.
Worship Leader: Rev. Matt Alspaugh
Worship Associate: Karen O’Malia
11 AM Sanctuary
In Tarot, the Fool is the card numbered zero, often depicting a distracted wanderer about to step off a cliff. The Fool’s Journey is a metaphor for a person’s journey through all the phases of life. What fool’s journeys are we on? What diversions, distractions, and chasms complicate our journeys? How do we get back on track?
Worship Leader: Rev. Matt Alspaugh
Worship Associate: Andy Pfenger
9:30 AM Channing Hall
How do we follow the first Unitarian Universalist principle (listed above) when we adamantly disagree on politics and religion. A discussion.
11 AM Sanctuary
We celebrate diversity, yet often have diverse strong and well-researched opinions. How do we practice the art of ‘beloved community’? Both in the microcosm among us and in the macrocosm around us, this spiritual discipline may well be our greatest resource for life in the 21st century.
Worship Leader: Rev. V. Elaine Strawn
Worship Associate: Karen Stangl
This is Pulpit Exchange Sunday, Pulpit exchanges are an old tradition in our movement, allowing congregations to hear from different ministers. Matt will be speaking at the UU Fellowship of Wayne County, OH; and the minister there, Rev. Elaine Strawn, will speak here at UUYO.
9:30 AM Channing Hall
Al Pierce, a member of the church and Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice at YSU, will talk about the recognition of the differences of evilness in criminal law.

No, we’re not talking about a bucket list — take a balloon ride, or bungee jump, or take a trip to New Zealand. We’re talking about wills and estates and medical plans so that your wishes are made known and to care for those around you after you’re gone.
Whether you are making plans for yourself or are thinking about others — parents, maybe — who need to plan, this workshop is for you.
Dan Betts, an Certified Financial Planner, and Charlene Burke, an attorney, will discuss options available to you for estate planning, medical directives, wills and other tools should you become incapacitated or die unexpectedly.
12:15 PM Channing Hall
We will have an all-church potluck luncheon after the service. Please bring whatever delicious food item suits your fancy. If this works, we hope to do it once a month.
11 AM Sanctuary
Claude Debussy said that “music is the space between the notes.” In music, in worship, and in life, the silence is often as important as the sound. We’ll explore the space between the notes of our lives. This is a multigenerational service.
Worship Leader: Rev. Matt Alspaugh
Worship Associates: Brad and Maria Barefoot
9:30 AM Channing Hall
Ellen and Lowell Satre will show photos and talk about their 2011 tandem bicycle adventure in France and England. This final segment will cover Brittany as well as the South of England.

How we give our money both in life and at death says a lot about who we really are. Dan Betts, a Certified Financial Planner who has guided the UUYO Endowment Investments for the past eight years, will speak on the power of giving to cure our “not enough” malady, and provide a way to leave a positive legacy to others.
